It's October! High time to go pick some apples from growers located throughout the Chicago region. But do be smart: call first to verify their days and times of operation. Have fun! And, as always, if you know of orchards which are not on this list, please let me know so we can share the good news.

ILLINOIS

Bell's Apple Orchard, IL Hwy. 22, Barrington (a quarter mile west of U.S. Hwy. 12 near Lake Zurich & Barrington). 9-5 daily. Bakery, boutique, and gift shop. (708) 438-2211.

Bystricky's Orchard, 4202 N. IL Hwy. 47, Woodstock. 9:30-5 weekends. Fresh apple cider. (815) 338-3360.

Heinz Orchard, 1050 Crest Rd., Libertyville (Green Oaks). 9-5 Monday-Friday & 9-4 Saturday-Sunday. (708) 362-0074.

Honey Hill Orchard, Waterman (near DeKalb; 2-1/2 mi. north of Waterman Post Office on Waterman Rd. (also called Elm St.), 1 mi. west of IL Hwy. 23). 9-5:30 daily. Raspberries, also. (815) 264-3337.

Quig's Orchard, 300 S. IL Hwy. 83., Mundelein (just northwest of Midlothian Rd.). Tuesday-Sunday. 7-5 (until 8:30 p.m. Friday--Fish Fry). (708) 566-4520.
